Language, our most human characteristic, is a code based on rules that allows us to learn, work and communicate.

Find out more about spoken language development in children and the different skills a child accomplishes in the following age ranges.

 

* Birth – 3 months:  

-         He makes sounds

-         He cries to express his needs

* 3 – 6 months:       

-         He babbles using sounds like /m/ or /b/

-         He vocalizes to express feelings

* 7 – 1 year:

-         He babbles longer groups of sounds (mamama…)

-         He begins to imitate the speech sounds heard

* 1 – 2 years:

-         He says his first words

-         He uses more and more words every month

-         He uses “yes”

-         He begins to put 2 words together

* 2 – 3 years:

-         He names the majority of the objects he wants

-         He uses “I” and “me”

-         He uses “no”

-         He puts 2 or 3 words together in short sentences that become longer around 3 years

* 3 – 4 years:

-         His speech is usually understood by others

-         He uses longer sentences (4, 5 or more words)

-         He still does grammatical errors in his sentences

* 4 – 5 years:

-         He communicates easily with others

-         Uses long, correct sentences with details

-         He usually speaks correctly except in some sounds (/r/, /s/, /ch/…) and some difficult words

* 6 – 7 years:

-         He uses long, complex and correct sentences          

-         He speaks correctly all the words 

-         He pronounces all speech sounds
